Sisters Redefine Fun

Fun—what is it?

We typically think of fun as entertainment, laughter, hanging out with friends, watching a movie, vacationing, playing games—but is that really fun? Or is that entertainment and distraction from what fun really is?

I think we, as sisters, need to redefine fun. Fun will no longer be worldly entertainment that makes us idle or too busy and distracted to do what we actually need to do. Fun will no longer be a waste of time.

Fun, as I define it, is encountering the love of God and sharing it with others. I am telling you that there is nothing more fun than reaching and teaching other people. It is a great joy to smile at a cashier who is downtrodden and has had a bad day and see her get a sparkle back in her eyes. There is nothing more fun than praying for someone and having that person look you in the eye and say, “This is exactly what I needed. I prayed today and asked God, ‘If You are real, would You send someone to me?’ You are the one.”

You start listening to the Holy Spirit. You can listen to the Spirit of God because you are not distracted. You get to enjoy eternal fun. There is nothing more fun than teaching people the word of God and witnessing the light bulb go off inside of them so they recognize their own limitations and shortcomings and choose to walk away from their sin. That is so much better than beating people over the head and pointing out everything they are doing wrong.

God’s love is long-suffering. The Bible says that a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day. Think about it. If God will wait a day, He will wait a thousand years. In the eternal scheme, that is what it is. When we are teaching someone the word of God, we can wait a thousand years, a thousand days.

The word of God is sharper than a double-edged sword, and it will cut through and penetrate people when we are teaching them. We don’t have to be their spirit. We can show them the way so that they can lean in and hear from the Holy Spirit, who is their guide and their teacher and their friend. He will bring them into the likeness of Jesus. We can’t do that. We are never going to transform someone into the likeness of Jesus. What we can do is be the hands and feet that plant the seeds and water the garden so that the Lord can bring about the harvest. It is His work. It is not our work.

This work, laboring with the Lord, and the worship that goes along with it is the most fun you will ever experience in your life. Disney World is not the most fun place. Disney World is not the happiest place on earth. The happiest place on earth is being in the presence of God, encountering the love of God, and sharing that with others.

I challenge you to redefine fun in your school, in your family, with your parents, with your children, with your work. Start bringing God’s kind of fun into this world. Reach one, teach one. I guarantee you that it will be the most fun you ever have.
